A little history...
In 1948, Graham and Aileen Jefferson opened
Jefferson Florist in a small shop located on Third Street in
Downtown Greenville, North Carolina. As Greenville grew and the new Pitt
County Memorial Hospital opened on the west side of town, the couple relocated
the store to a new address on West Fifth Street. It was in 1976 that their
daughter Linda "Jef" Glenn and her husband Ed moved from the Washington DC area
to Pitt County joining the family business. While flowers and plants
remained the core of the business, Ed and Jef brought new life to the expanded
retail store. A fine stationery department was added as well as a
children's store and an expansive collection of home accessories from around the
world.
A second Greenville location was added in 1990 at the Lynndale
Shoppes retail center moving much of the business operation to this new and
highly visible area. In 2004, Ed and Jef were joined by their son Michael
adding a third generation to the business. It was a short time later that
the Glenns stumbled upon an opportunity to purchase an abandoned and mostly
forgotten department store building along Greenville's original shopping street
in the downtown area. The former Blount Harvey Department Store, built in
1923 was once a shopping destination in Eastern North Carolina, though since
it's closing in the mid 80's the building stood vacant for two decades without
repair.
After 16 months of tedious restoration, Jefferson's opened its doors in the
reclaimed space in the spring of 2006. The restored structure has since
been honored with recognition by the City of Greenville as a Local Landmark
property. Additionally the 'Jefferson Blount Harvey Building' was placed
on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of
Interior in 2008.
Today our family continues to deliver fresh flowers both
locally and around the world. We invite you to join us for a visit.
